Wayne Prater Jr. of Freeburn, KY, passed away on April 28th in Pikeville, KY. He was born May 20th, 1942 at O’Keeffe, WV to the late Wayne and Menda (Ratliff) Prater. He attended Matewan High School where he was active in football and baseball. He went on throughout his life playing ball and mentoring others and was kindly referred to as Coach Prater by generations of young players. Wayne had a great love for his family and also for people and sharing about God. He rarely met a stranger and if so, they quickly became friends. Wayne was a coal miner and worked at Caney Branch and Ken-Car Coal. His hobbies included fishing, golfing, cock fighting, politics, UK basketball and meeting people with whom quickly became friends. He was a member of the Barrenshe Church of God.
Wayne was preceded in death my one brother, Bill Prater, and four sisters, Emogene Staton, Phyllis Ferrell, Leedy Hurley, and Mary Alice Prater and special daughter Barbara Nichols.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 54 years Margie (Mounts) Prater whom he loved and adored. His children that he devoted his life to Lisa Miller and Adam Prater(Betty) both of Freeburn, KY. Grandchildren Andy (Amber) Blankenship of Stanville, KY and Lindsay Michelle Blankenship of Freeburn KY. One great-grandchild Ava Reese Blankenship whom he lovingly called Papa’s Little Princess. He was excitedly awaiting the birth of Adam’s son Gunner Cash in the upcoming weeks.
Wayne’s family also includes brothers Bobby (Sandra) Prater of Greenville, SC, Ross (Carol) Prater of St. Louis, MO, and Terry (Patty) Prater of Berwin, IL. Sister Lucita Prater of Red Jacket, WV. Special sister whom he called his favorite Rochella Hurley.
The family wishes to express thanks to the staff of Williamson Memorial Hospital for making his stay there so pleasant. A special thank- you to his family at Barrenshe Church of God and all of the friends and relatives that called or visited during his last days and during this sad time. Wayne had so many friends and neighbors that were very dear to him.
Funeral services will be at Barrenshe Church of God at 440 Barrenshe Creek, Freeburn, KY with Pastors Bobby Wolford and Doug Maynard officiating. Visitation services will begin Wednesday May 1rst at 6pm with special singing, Thursday May 2nd at 6pm with service at 7 pm. The funeral will be Friday, May 4th at 1pm. Burial will follow at the Flannary Mounts Cemetery at Barrenshe Creek, Freeburn, KY. Family and friends will be serving as pallbearers.
